Woonsocket

The heart of Woonsocket is its Main Street, which today is lined with many commercial buildings, as well as several mills dating back to the early 19th century. Known as the Historic District, the North End of Woonsocket offers residential areas with historic homes in popular architectural styles such as Tudor, Queen Anne Victorian, and Colonial Revival. The town also has homes for sale in more contemporary styles such as Ranch and Colonial.

Woonsocket is very proud of its rich history and culture, which is preserved within museums throughout the city. One of the most popular historical attractions is the Museum of Work and Culture which is managed by the Rhode Island Historical Society and run by volunteers. The museum itself is in a 1915 textile mill which allows guests to explore and appreciate the local history. The city is known for being one of the country's largest textile manufacturing centers of the 19th century. Woonsocket was originally formed from six mill villages in 1888, with many of the original mills still standing to this day.

Woonsocket is one of the most heavily French-Canadian cities in New England. Historically, the city has been called, "La ville la plus française aux États-Unis" (The most French city in America). One great way to appreciate the past while enjoying current entertainment is Woonsocket's Stadium Theatre. Built in the 1920's, the Stadium Theater possesses the grandeur of an antique movie house while providing world-class performances and regional acts. One of the town's annual highlights is October's Autumnfest which provides seasonal entertainment appropriate for all ages, including rides, consumer showcases, a beer garden, food, art, and more.
