Charlestown

Charlestown is a town in Washington County, Rhode Island. Established in 1738, this coastal town is often referred to as "the best kept secret in Rhode Island."

Charlestown is known for its pristine beaches including East Beach, Charlestown Breachway, Charlestown Town Beach and Blue Shutters Beach. Most beaches are open to the public, however an area of East Beach belongs to the Quonochontaug East Beach Association. Quonochontaug is a private beach community with exclusive access to half a mile of private beach, two salt­water ponds, a Yacht Club and a Tennis Club. Quonochontaug-or "Quonnie" to the locals-is a popular summer vacation destination with many homes available to rent or own.

Because of its beautiful beaches, residents and visitors of Charlestown can take part in many outdoor activities such as beach campgrounds, surfing, fishing, bird watching and boating. Charlestown also has many farms where guests can buy locally grown produce and local eggs and meat.

Charlestown also offers a variety of restaurants and shops-including the very popular Fantastic Umbrella Factory. Opened since 1968, the Fantastic Umbrella Factory is described as a "19th century farmyard shopperʼs paradise and international bazaar" with a variety of stores, two restaurants, gardens and animals.

This beach community has a variety of real estate, including properties with gorgeous views or private beach access. Homes for sale include single­family homes and condominiums that come in a variety of architectural styles-some which are custom built homes.

With its uncommonly large amount of conservation and recreation land, Charlestown is a remarkable collection of pristine natural resources. Burlingame State Park, Ninigret Wildlife Refuge, Ninigret Park and East Beach comprise approximately 20 percent of the total land area of the town and its protected wetlands, fresh and salt water ponds, and a barrier beach system.
