Hopkinton is a quaint, rural town in Washington County, Rhode Island that is home to over 8,000 residents. Hopkinton was incorporated in 1757 as its own town separate from Westerly. The town was named after Stephen Hopkins, the signer of the Declaration of Independence, and past Governor of Rhode Island.

A rural community, Hopkinton residents originally made a living off of family farms, mills and small manufacturing enterprises. Many of the town's ponds are man­-made that were meant to provide power to the mills and many working families relied on these ponds and streams for their livelihood.

Today, Hopkinton has many forests, state parks and management areas. Certain areas of Hopkinton are very hilly, making it a great place for hikers. The Arcadia Wildlife Management Area, the state's largest recreational area, occupies 785 acres of Hopkinton. With over 14,000 acres the area is not only a great place for hiking, but for hunting, fishing, mountain biking and horseback riding. In certain areas of the park, camping is permitted as well as canoeing and kayaking.
