More About Somerset

Incorporated in 1790, Somerset is a waterfront community situated off Mount Hope Bay. The town is bordered by Swansea on the west, Dighton on the north, Fall River on the east (across the Taunton River), and Bristol, Rhode Island, to the south. The town is accessed via Interstate 195 which provides a direct route to Providence.

Impressions/Character

Once one of America's vital shipping points, Somerset has transitioned over the years into a scenic suburb. Historically linked to Fall River, the two areas are currently connected by the Veterans Memorial Bridge, which is the fourth bridge to be constructed over the Taunton River. In the 1960s, Somerset earned the nickname "Musictown" as a result of its thriving music department which at the time included a marching band, concert band, orchestra, chorus, glee club, show group, women's chorus, and string ensemble. To this day, the town celebrates its annual Musictown Festival, showcasing over a week of events each year. The Somerset Cultural Council is a committee of individuals appointed with the specific task of arranging concerts, festivals, lectures, and other exhibits by local artisans. With its parks, beaches, and seasonal programs, Somerset embodies the true essence of a New England seaside town.
